2 Weekend Fires for Co. 29
Just before 2:00 in the morning on Saturday 3/18, units from the 5th and 7th battalions, with mutual aid from NDWFD, were alerted to the 10000 Block of Traverse Way in Co. 47’s area for a house on fire. Engine 47 arrived with fire showing from a 2 story single family dwelling. It was determined that it was an outside in fire that had started on the deck. The Working Fire Dispatch was started, bringing Engine 292 and Truck 29 to the scene. Engine 292 arrived on the scene and was put to work shortly after on Division 2, where they extinguished fire in the Charlie and Delta quadrants, as well as in the attic space above the attached garage. Truck 29 assumed RIT responsibilities and was later reassigned to overhaul the Charlie side deck, where there had been a partial collapse. 29 units remained on scene for over 2 hours before returning to service.
Around 11:30 in the morning on Sunday 3/19, Truck 29 was alerted as the third due special service to the 2800 Block of Melisa Dr in Co. 32’s area for a garage fire. Battalion 5 arrived with smoke showing from the garage of a 2 story, lightweight single family dwelling and started the Working Fire Dispatch. Truck 29 was assigned as the Division 2 supervisor, completing primary searches which were negative, as well as checking for vertical fire extension. Truck 29 remained on scene for about 2 hours before returning to service. During this time, Engine 292 remained staffed in quarters, handling various incidents including an outside fire in Co. 42’s area and an auto accident on the Anacostia Freeway.
